On the amp pictured at the top of this article, each output is coded with a different color for each positive terminal, but the negative terminals are all black; in such a case, connect the red-coded speaker-cable conductors to the colored terminals and the black-coded conductors to the black terminals.
Then, at the other end of the cable, connect the red conductor to the red terminal of each speaker and the black conductor to the black terminal. If not, don't worry about it; this is a feature that's losing favor, especially among more mainstream manufacturers.
However, depending on the amp, this can introduce a lot of noise into the audio signal. Here is a quick procedure to ensure the trim controls are set optimally. This process is called gain structuring , which maximizes the gain amplification while minimizing noise. First, set all the trim controls in their lowest or minimum position usually, that's fully counterclockwise.
However, you will need to connect your speakers to the amp and turn it on. One by one, turn up the trim controls until you hear hiss in that channel's speaker. At this point, the gain is high enough that you can hear the amp's internal self-noise. Back off the trim until the hiss is gone.
After doing this for all channels, the trim controls should be in roughly the same position; if one is very different from the others, there's probably something wrong with that channel. That's all there is to it. Once you have set up your amp, it's time to kick back and enjoy the sound of your new separates.
What about RCA and speaker cable direction? If I recall, many manufacturers of cables include arrows for which direction the cable should be connected a given component to maximize signal transfer.
Any comments or thoughts on this I have no idea why some manufacturers specify a direction on their cable jackets. Normally, such things are marketing hype, but I see no marketing benefit to this. I had been wondering about the trim controls on my Parasound and if they should be tweaked. Now I know how to do it and why. Good to know, Scott. I guess Audioquest must be one of those manufacturers among others because I'm looking at my new Syndney cables I brought and sure enough there are those arrows.
I may make an inquiry to Shane Buettner if he is still at Audioquest for comments as to why the company opts to do this. Also, have old Monster Z series cables. Any recommendation on replacing these? Are they too old to use? I moved to paint the self it was on and removed the speakers. I have the clip with bare wires to connect to the speaker and the receiver. It worked fine until I moved it.
Can you help. I have a question. I have a stereo system like the above one in your instructions. Is there any way I can connect my iPhone to the speakers? I need to know if you can connect the DVD player to the tv. How could you do that? The stereo is working from being connected like showen above. I have a kenwood vr and I want to hook up three speakers two for left and right and one for the center but I have it all hooked up but no matter what mode i choose i can never get them to all three play at the same time only either the left and right alone.
Or the center alone. I recently aquired a new jbl studio series s and tried connecting it to my current home theater system. I then split the wires coming from the speaker and put half in the subwoofer port, and the other half in the front center port. Do you know what could be causeing this, and how I could potentially fix this? I have a Pioneer vsxk receiver my house came with speakers built in, 2 in the family room 2 in the upstairs master bedroom and two in the foyer, the back of the receiver has spots for front LR, center, and surround sound LR.
I can get the family room speakers to play but not the rest. The up stairs bedroom plays sometimes but ill cut off. Hi Nick, I have kenwood A7j and was wondering what is the function of Adapter input which has a ground connection, secondly what is the long term effect of using a 4ohms rated speaker instead of the recommended ohms.
Your response will be highly appreciated. Is it ok to hook up a powered amp to a cd player that has volume control or is that bad? He wants it hooked up so he can listen to music in his hangar. I have speaker wires with red, yellow, and white ends. I have an audio cable with yellow and white ends. Just confused.
Please help, I know these are old systems. They worked great the last time we had them hooked up. Yeah, I know how dumb that was now. They have to have wires because there are no ports to plug red or yellow wires in to. Should I trash this whole system although it has great sentimental value to us? Thanks so much! Is there any way you can take pictures of the back of the Panasonic receiver and the speaker cables, then upload them or send them to my email nick stereobarn. This would help me figure what type of speakers would work for you.
Good Evening , have a small hard drive -power spec — with songs and artist name and song name. I can play it threw my TV and Laptop. I am so lost. I wanted to go vintage for my stereo system. My last system went off with out a bitch. Could play my record player and my mp3. I have two cabinet technics speakers connected to a phisher amp and tuner. I bout these at a thrift store. I have it connected right.
What am I doing wrong? Do they just not work? I have a question on setting up my stereo. I followed the Denon set-up instructions, but no sound comes out of the subwoofer or the Onkyo speakers. Thanks a lot for this guide.
I am ready to buy a second hand Denon DRW cassette deck to be able to re-enjoy my year old cassettes. I only use RCA cables. I am worried though that the cassette deck might not work. Is this a possibility? Hey Nick, I just got my old 80s Scott receiver down from the attic for te garage.
Its two speakers both have 4 wires, black and red, black and red, which plugged into the back of the units 8 recepticles. The receiver has only 4 places to hook them into. I tried hokking both left and right to left and right.
No sound. What do you suggest? I am not so much interested in bluetooth or wireless.. I am located in austin texas and like to put my eyes on the prize before I buy. They are not a matched set.
Or vice-versa. I think I need a preamp to get the speakers to work. Hello, there are two speakers label led A and B, but in the picture you have the wires for the speaker B upper and lower connected to the receiver.
There is no use of speaker A? I have a Speaker distribution system, an integrated stereo amplifier is that the receiver? Which of the first 3 component items do I have to hook up — just the amplifer? I have more limited space than I did previously.
Hi so i have a problem with a stereo system my family has. Or Perhaps its the speaker wires that arent connected properly? The photo of the back of the receiver fixed what I had connected wrong! I now have music- thank you Nick! Recently I bought a lvpin mini amp off ebay. Would it be possible to connect an i-pod or phone to the aux jack of the mini amp, connect it to my jvc tape deck and then record onto a tape. Would this be possible? How could I go about connecting the lvpin amplifier to the tape deck and manage to record on tape with my cassette deck.
I recently bought a vintage Marantz b tunner. The guy I bought it from says that thentumer would need an amp for the passive speakers to plays. Is there a way I could hook up the vintage Marantz b tuner to the powered speakers because those speakers do have an amp built into the speaker cabinet. I look forward to your response. How can I use the remote to control the turntable? I have question. The only thing I have connected is a Pioneer CD player at this time.
Since the KC has its own equalizer do I need to use the Bose equalizer? If I do where would I connect it. Thanks for any expertise yon can offer. I posted a question on connecting a bose equalizer up a couple of days ago.
Where do I find if you received it? Hi — we have a vintage stereo system equalizer, CD player, tape deck, turntable and receiver. I have no idea how to hook the pieces.
Can you help? Hello, I find this page to be extremely helpful and I hope you will find it in your heart to address my problem individually. I have been given the opportunity to rebuild a system with the hope that I can purchase it once its up and running. I have no wires or cables at this time so I think you can save me some time and money through my own trial and error.
I have an old Sony speaker from my dad. The speakers have a split wire coming out of the back and I have no Idea what this is called or what I could connect this to to make this work with something else. Note: The speakers are from a Stereo system and the system in the middle is gone, So there is only the speaker.
There are 2 outdoor speakers that work very nicely with the radio mostly when showering. The A switch is for the bedroom speakers on top of the bedroom TV center. I was wondering if I could replace the A speakers with wireless ones and how? Do you know what kind I need and about how much. I will have my contractoe and his son do the job. I already gave his son your site info. He is going to school for Electical Engineering and this is his area!
Nick, I have an austic brother-in law that has to have music on 24 hours a day. He has a multi piece stereo system that a buddy disconnected to help him move.
I tried to help but got no where. The system has a turntable, tuner, equalizer, cassette deck, amplifier, and a CD player. Any help you could give me as to how to hook these up would be greatly appreciated.
I had to but him a mini boom box in the interim…and he is not happy! I have a small surround sound set of speakers and there standing speakers. Our living room is big and very tall ceilings so we like it kinda loud. Also I have a sub woofer with three speakers I asume. Please help me. Sincerely waiting to rock on. Hi Nick, Here is my question to to you I want to connect some mini deck speakers to a stereo receiver to play records.
The speaker cables consist of one wire with a RCA type plug low frequency and one bare end wire for high frequency. My receiver has the phono preamp. It has tape record and play jacks. Do I put 1 left low frequency cable into tape play jack left and the high frequency bare wire into the left screw lug and tighten.
Same for the right side. Do I have this right? This is option one. Will I be successful? Thanks Ron. Hi Nick, My stackable stereo was originally set up by a professional to play from wired speakers throughout the house. Please, can you explain how to set this up? Ok so im trying to hook up an old sharp cd player to my tv. Was wondering if it could play the sound thru my cd player from my tv as a home surround sound system but not sure what I will need if it will.
It has only and audio out put and a phono jack Not sure what it is used for like headphones …please help. We had a 5-disc changer on it before and it worked fine. Please can you tell me what the optical terminal is for on my CD player?
And where would it do to. Many thanks indeed, like from everyone of your other readers above have expressed, for a most illuminating article on the subject. My TV is also connected to my stereo system so that I am able to n play TV programs through my Speakers when I want to and obviously get much clearer sound. Help, my husband wants to use his old speakers that connect with three prongs yellow, white and red.
Does he need to scrap the speakers they are hooked up to the TV and sound great! I have seen these new, portable digital audio players — DAP — that have a 3. Is the voltage output high enough to act as a source to the receiver? Awesome job Nick. Thanks in advance. This was awesome. I have beautiful marble speakers, a tub amp, a cd player, and a Denon stereo amplifier mulit zone unit. I am thinking that the Denon was part of my in wall unit and I wont need it for this set up.
Is that correct?? When I add a turntable, will I need to add a pre-amp? Thank you! I have an old Marantz amplifier model number MA We also have a Marantz turntable and Marantz cassette deck. We have a Technics cd player. We have JBL speakers. It all worked really well until about a year ago, when the amplifier stopped working.
In your opinion is it worth trying to get an old amplifier repaired or should we just buy a new one. The amplifier is about 30 years old. If you think we should buy a new one, can you recomment one.
I have a Yamaha RX Tuner and on the back it has a selector switch. How do I hook the hdmi cables? And how should I connect the for best sound? I bought it for playing HDCDs on a carousel.
Nick, this was one of the most comprehensible posts on getting my old stereo system reconfigured which includes a Harmon Kardon tape deck, Denon receiver and Teac CD player along with a new turntable that I received as a gift. The turntable will be on an adjacent wall unit as it needs the extra room for opening the lid.
Do you agree with my decision? The speakers will be placed on top of each of the units. Thanks for giving such great advice to everyone!!! Hello Nick! How to connect a technics sa-g67 av receiver to a Sony s. Lovely to see so many people getting their tech woes fixed on this thread. May I ask about hooking up a cassette deck to my system. However my cassette deck is now kaput. It was connected with a ribbon lead designated as the tape input on the amp.
Can I run to the other spare video aux socket on the amp? Many thanks Angela. I have an onkyo stereo and all i want is to hook speakers to it. I cannot get them to play. I have tested the speaker wire and its good. But when i hook them to stereo i get no sound. I have a Kenwood equalizer and a kr receiver and car speakers and wires I need help hooking it up.
Any ideas,???? I can send you pics of my system if you like!! Most Regards,. My first question is. Which speakers would you suggest for 5. The closest radio stations are miles away. Please advise.
Thank you!!! Hi Nick, I bought a home that has whole house audio speakers installed in 6 rooms. The only connection point is two sets of banana plug female connections in the wall of a closet. How do I connect a receiver to power the system and play some music throughout the house? I recently moved and am trying to get my Technics SD -S system to work again. I set it up and had all components working tuner, tapedeck, CD player and turntable.
I tested all and they worked fine. The next day , I tried playing a CD and the sound quit after about 5 minutes. I even had my amplifer checked by a local stereo store and they found no problems. I have tried connecting my speakers Klipsch speakers to both ports A and B and nothing. Is it possible that the speaker wire is bad? I even tried cutting off the older ends and starting with a fresh end but to no avail.
Can you suggest something? I have an old technics boombox SA C Hi Nick! Is there any help you can give me? Thank you for this site! I am trying to hook up a system for my husband since he has been hospitalized most of the year and had surgeries.
I know he would enjoy hearing music as his hearing has been damaged, and the tones coming off the TV are not enough. I am really interested in playing vinyl of listening to radio. Thank you in advance. Nick, who is my Son, has not worked for me for years, and no one was checking this site. I just discovered all of these requests for assistance and I am answering some.
I assume by now you are hooked up and running, but if not, let me know. That is a nice stack of equipment that you have listed, and I hope you are getting some use from it. Sorry for having left you hanging with no reply. Yes I got how to hook up my CD to my receiver and the speakers.
But I also have a vintage reel to reel and equalizer I have no clue what goes where. Can u help me? These all have HDMi ports as well as optical and coax inputs. I know this is wrong but not sure which to favour and which to remove. Have you set up one of these amps? Hi Nick, Im new to audio component systems…have some equipment id like to hookup…but have no manuals. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I cant figure where the inputs from the amplifier connect to the preamp.
External processer? Main 1? Main 2? Thanks Jay. Why are you using 2 wires per post? I am lost for words ……. I wanted to add a Logitech Bluetooth adapter so I can play music from my phone. How do I connect it. I would like to operate each system — independently thru a single set of speakers. Is there a relay device or anything else I could use to switch from one set of components to the other? Someone suggested simply doubling up the wires from both sets onto the speakers….
If I purchase the Technics turntable, do I need to purchase a pre-amp, too? Thanks so much for your help!! Now where do i put the other set of speakers in? That amplifier is not designed to run 2 pairs of speakers, and doing so may cause damage to the amplifier. Suggestion to correct the scratchy sounds?
Connie, It is likely the CD player is on its way out. Have you tried the discs in your car, or on another machine to see how they sound? If they sound good there, check to see what input the CD player is connected to on the back of the Pioneer, make sure it is not plugged where it should not be.
Sometimes the input circuit on the receiver goes bad, and connecting to another one will clear the problem up. I needed to include a Logitech Bluetooth connector so I can play music from my telephone. How would I associate it. Any help? Thank you, however I seem to have an older model. The cables to connect each system are wide, each of the playing systems has system 1 2 orn3 on the back and the amp has all 3.
Its got the line out av on the cd player. The speaker have on wire coming out the back and the stereo has Four slide the wires in and then push up the clip and it locks it in two are black and two are Red for the Left and Right can you please help me figure this out are do I have to buy speakers with the same set up as the receiver.
I found these tips very helpful because I setup my stereo system first time. I got some good alpine speakers. Wonderful experience. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips for setting up the stereo system quickly. This is my first time so I am extremely excited. My coder is trying to persuade me to move to. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses.
I have heard fantastic things about blogengine. Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress posts into it? Any kind of help would be really appreciated! Two for LF and two foe HF. My built in speakers just have two connections. Can I just link the two blacks terminals on the amplifier and the two reds as well? Thanks for the great explanation above. Had this all set up way back when, just not sure of the sequence that is needed. See the full list of brands here that we sell at Stereo Barn.

The Mani is our upgrade pick because it is bespoke yet versatile. It's compatible with MM and MC cartridges, has four switchable gain modes, and is designed and built in California. If you're looking for an affordable phono preamp to pair with your entry-level turntable, this is a great choice. It allows you to adjust the gain and capacitance, meaning it'll work with a wide range of amplifiers and you can tinker with its sound. A phono preamplifier , also known as a phono stage, is a necessary component in any turntable hi-fi system.
Its job is twofold. First, it takes the extremely weak signal from the turntable's phono cartridge and pre -amplifies on the way to the amplifier, so your speakers can play it at a reasonable volume. Second, it equalizes the signal so that the record sounds as true as possible to the original recording.
These days a lot of turntables come with built-in phono preamplifier — we call these "integrated" turntables — which allows you to connect the them directly to an amplifier or powered speaker. It's simple and convenient system. However a dedicated external phono preamplifier connected to a turntable will almost always sound better because moving the preamp further away from the moving bits of the turntable reduces the amount of excess noise introduced to your signal.
It's essentially an upgraded version of the company's RT80, with a solid plinth and an improved cartridge. The Modern Record Player is a true all-in-one system with a turntable, preamp, custom amplifier and built-in speakers. If you want a beautiful and high-end system, this is you best bet. A turntable , or record player, is an analog device used for playing vinyl.
There are a number of key components working in tandem that are required for the turntable to work, but in a nutshell the turntable's stylus or needle gets dropped on a spinning record, it picks up the vibrations from the record's grooves and it then converts them into an electrical signal.
That signal is then sent to the phono preamplifier and then amplifier, where's it's amplified so that the speakers or headphones can actually play it. The DL is still one of the best and most popular popular phono cartridges every produced. It requires a moving coil phono stage with 60dB or more of gain, but when set up properly it reproduces music with a level of fidelity that few can touch.
The Hana SL is one of those rare, affordable high-end moving coil cartridges that works well on a wide range of turntable arms. If you have the deep pockets, this cartridge will show you just how good vinyl can really sound. The Nagaoka MP is our best budget pick. It tracks pristine and worn out grooves with authority, and is compatible with a wide range of moving magnet phono stages.
A phono cartridge is a complex electro-mechanical device that sits on the end of a turntable's tonearm and holds the stylus in place. It's also responsible for converting the vibrations that the stylus picks up into an analog signal.
The best phono cartridges are the ones that are the most accurate at this process. An easy and fun way to improve your turntable's audio quality is to buy a better phono cartridge. There are two main types of phono cartridges, moving magnet MM or moving coil MC , which use different mechanisms to convert vibrations into an audio signal.
The gist is that MM cartridges are significantly easier to make, but they're less sensitive and deliver a less accurate signal. If you own an entry-level turntable, there's a good chance it has an MM cartridge. Not all turntables are compatible with all phono cartridges. Before upgrading to a different phono cartridge, you first need to make sure it's compatible with your existing turntable. The Nucleus is the best digital streamer for anybody with a large CD collection and utilizes multiple streaming services.

A digital music streamer or network streamer is the ultimate hi-fi component for the home.
