What is this new cold virus 2012

Perhaps there's that one person on the work call who's not muted and starts a coughing fit before a meek: "It's not Covid, I've been tested! Or, maybe you've been ill and agree with people saying this is no ordinary cold - but the "worst cold ever" or a "super cold".

The retail worker from Bournemouth caught what she calls "the worst cold ever" at a festival. A normal cold for her would have "a runny nose, sneezing, a bit of a sore throat and feeling a bit rundown". Rebecca did lateral flow tests and got negative results, but was ill for more than a week, and was left wondering "if it's ever going to end". It may not be Covid, but it is linked to what's happened in the past 18 months. She says the numbers have been as high as you'd see in a normal winter and the main reason is because of the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

We think that that was primarily due to the restrictions on meeting up. Got my first cold since about January and I can confirm it's one of the worst colds I've had - 'freshers' flu' on steroids.

So while the lockdown rules were designed to stop Covid spreading, they also stopped other viruses moving between people too. Now we're going out, meeting with friends and getting on public transport again, the common cold spreads again. Not mixing so much last winter has meant this year the government's trying to get more people than ever to have a flu vaccine. Health officials are worried as it will be the first year both Covid and flu will circulate at the same time, so they want everyone who's eligible to get it.

More than 40 million people across the UK are being offered a flu jab, including for the first time, all secondary-school children up to the age of Firstly, remember the three main symptoms of coronavirus. The doctor also pointed out that the symptoms the omicron and previous COVID variants have in common, which are fever, chills, headache and sore throat in the early stages and coughing, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing as the illness progress.

Researchers previously discovered that omicron may have acquired at least one of its mutations by picking up a snippet of genetic material from the common cold virus, possibly in an effort to make itself look "more human" in order to evade attack by the immune system. Doctors warned that parents may find it difficult to determine their children's illnesses right now due to the ongoing cold and flu season.

So any time a child gets sick, they need to be kept at home so they don't run the risk of spreading whatever it is they have, particularly if they have COVID," said Dr. Mark Sawyer, a pediatric infectious disease specialist with Rady Children's Hospital. I have had common colds more severe than this and no one would have been able to tell that I was ill simply by looking at me. However, there are many other symptoms that can appear as well; falls and changes in level of consciousness in older people, the worsening of chronic conditions, conjunctivitis, and the loss of taste and smell.

People with severe COVID have trouble breathing and will need supplemental oxygen or ventilator assisted breathing in hospitals. Fewer people are getting severe COVID, but a lot of people are getting mild illnesses that, like my experience, are not easy to distinguish. This is allowing for very easy transmission and COVID outbreaks have increased again in hospitals and congregate settings. What I am seeing more of in COVID cases now are worsening of chronic conditions and changes of level of consciousness as mentioned with older people , a mild dry cough, mild diarrhea, sneezing and a stuffy nose.

Robert G. Lahita MD, Ph. Bob" , Director of the Institute for Autoimmune and Rheumatic Disease at Saint Joseph Health and author of Immunity Strong states, "Everyone's immune system is different, so people will have different responses when they contract this virus. Some people are asymptomatic and feel completely fine; others experience very severe symptoms and end up in the hospital.

In general, if you are vaccinated you will experience much less severe symptoms. Right now, there are many cases of the Omicron variant, which produces a more mild immune response.

According to Dr. Bob, "Again, it varies person to person. Some people feel bad for a day; others feel bad for longer. Everyone's immune system is unique. However, you can test positive for COVID up to months after initial infection without being contagious. Over the course of the entire — season, influenza A H3N2 viruses predominated nationally, followed by influenza B viruses; influenza A H1N1 viruses were identified less frequently.

Influenza A viruses predominated until the end of February , after which influenza B viruses were detected more often. While influenza can be serious for everyone, hospitalization data indicate people 65 and older were more severely impacted by the flu season, relative to other age groups. As of October , more than laboratory-confirmed, influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported during the flu season. Since influenza-associated pediatric mortality became a nationally-notifiable condition during the season, the total number of influenza-associated pediatric deaths had previously ranged from 34 to per season.

This excludes the pandemic, when pediatric deaths were reported to CDC during April 15, , through October 2, These infections in humans were mostly associated with prolonged exposure to pigs at agricultural fairs.

During the —13 influenza season, two additional H3N2v cases were reported, bringing the total number of H3N2v cases to One was reported from Minnesota, and the other from Iowa. Both infections occurred in children, one of which had known exposure to swine. Both patients recovered fully. See Influenza A H3N2v virus for more information. Top of Page. These results indicate that vaccination with the flu season vaccine reduced the risk of flu-associated medical visits from flu A H3N2 viruses by one half and from flu B viruses by two-thirds for most of the population.
